Despite the circumstances of the Hurricane, I hope you all enjoy your two days off with family and hope you stay safe! Please be smart and stay under safe cover until we get the word that Irma has moved on. If you lose power, try to conserve your phone battery for absolute emergencies. Just be smart!!
I'm thankful we're not getting the worst of it, but there is a lot of destruction happening around our country from this historic storm. Please remain safe while we get what we get. Keep those in Florida, the Caribbean, and South Georgia in your thoughts as they look at rebuilding, just like those in Houston.
Anyways... my whole point of posting today is so that we don't lost sight of the significance of today's date. I know it's hard for you guys to fully comprehend since you weren't alive in 2001, but for myself, your siblings, your parents, and many other family members, today is a day we will never forget.
On 9/11/2001, many innocent lives were lost, many buildings were destroyed, and many tears were shed, but we as a country remained strong.
I was in 7th grade Home Economics class when the attacks happened... my teacher turned on the TV when the news coverage began and I burned my scrambled eggs because I began watching the horrific things coming through the television and not what I was doing... It's kind of a goofy situation, but I'll never forget it.
Most people can tell you exactly where they were and what they were doing when they got word of the attacks.
Despite the many conspiracy theories out there about that day, please understand that these actions were made deliberately by a group of terrorists who had nothing to do with our country, other than their hatred for America. Our leaders at the time did a great job with a quick response, calling out the necessary groups, and making us (as Americans) feel safe in our homeland.
I remember times were different then. After the attacks, our country really felt unified as one... There were no tensions because of race, religion, gender, political affiliation, etc., we were all just Americans. You had people from all over the country rushing to NYC to help with the clean up and the search and rescue missions and it was amazing to see.
I'm going to post a few videos below because they will do a much better job of explaining what happened than I ever could.
Please watch the videos with an open mind and try to understand the significance of this date. I hope that in your lifetime, you guys never have to experience such an attack on our home front. While you're out of school, talk to those who you're with. Ask them where they were, what they remember, etc.
Remember those lives lost and the lives affected by the attacks!
I'll see you guys on Wednesday! We'll discuss it then. Be safe!

With the BrainPOP videos, our login is Jaspermiddleschool. The password is exceed.
The first just gives a rundown on the attacks, the second is about terrorism in general.
The youtube videos below contain a timeline of events at the WTC and Pentagon, and then the two addresses made by President George W. Bush following the attacks... One to the American people the night of the attacks, and one 9 days later when we declared the War on Terror.
